What are the food habits of gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans?

Although gorillas and chimpanzees are primates and close relatives of Man, they have very different tastes. While gorillas are more or less vegetarians, chimpanzees also enjoy some non-vegetarian food.

Gorillas feed mainly on leaves, shoots, stems, ferns, and occasionally ripe fruits. They feed in the early morning and miss afternoons. They prefer to rest in between their feeding times. Chimpanzees, on the other hand, love eating termites, ants and caterpillars. Using a little stick, they probe inside termite mounds or anthills. When the insects crawl on to the twig, they pull it out, and feast on it. Orangutans have an appetite for fruits. They spend hours on fruit trees such as fig or mango trees.

However, they also eat insects, eggs, chicks, small birds, lizards and even mice!
