When will whales become extinct?

Archaeological evidence suggests that primitive whaling, by North American Eskimos called Inuit and others in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, was practiced by 3000 BC, and it has continued in remove cultures to the present. All whale species are becoming less common due to the fact that they have been regularly hunted for food and oil. Other factors are environmental pollution and drift net fishing. The grey whale was hunted almost to extinction by 1925 but was placed under complete international protection and since the 1940s has increased in numbers. Some of the larger species of whales can be seen in Europe as they pass by during migration.

Fact file:

The humpback whale was also hunted almost to extinction, and its numbers dropped from 100,000 to 3,000 today. It is now generally protected.
