When was the Taj Mahal built?

The story of the Taj Mahal is in fact a sad and beautiful love story. Three hundred years ago there lived in India an emperor called Shah Jahan. His preferred wife was a beautiful and intelligent woman whom he loved greatly. Her title was Mumtazi Mahal, its shortened form, Taj Mahal, means ‘pride of the palace’. In the year 1630 his beloved wife died. He decided to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen. It took more than 20,000 men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahal, indeed one of the most stunning buildings in the world.

Fact File:

Minarets, or towers rise from each of the four corners of the Taj Mahal. The Taj itself soars another 200 feet into the air.
