When were buttons first used?

Nobody really knows who first used buttons or when. They seem to go back to the beginning of history. Some experts say perhaps even 30,000 to 40,000 years ago! Yet in some parts of the world they have never been used at all. After all, there are so many different ways of fastening clothes to keep it in place: pinning, buckling, lacing, belting, wrapping around, or even tying together. In the fourteenth century buttons became popular in Europe and from that time on they have never gone entirely out of fashion. Buttons have been made from almost any kind of material you can imagine. Metals that buttons have been made of include gold, silver, steel, copper tin, nickel, brass, pewter, and bronze.

Fact File:

Animal products have also been used for making buttons and these include: bone, horn, hoof, hair, leather, ivory, and shells. The list is indeed endless, some have even been made from glass, paper and porcelain.
