When were cats domesticated?

The cat has been around for a long, long time. Fossils of cats have been found which are millions of years old.

The domesticated cat we know today is the descendant of the wildcat, but just which wildcat we don’t exactly know, because it happened too long ago. Probably the breeds of domesticated cats we know breeds of domesticated cats we know all came from two or three of the small wildcats that existed in Europe, North Africa, and Asia thousands of years ago. The most accurate answer to this question is that cats were domesticated around 5,000 years ago. Cats and humans spent about a thousand years establishing a close relationship, and eventually the cat proved to be a great companion and household pet.

Egyptians worshipped the cat as a god. Their goddess Bast or Pacht, with a cat’s head, and sacrifices were offered to cats. The cat represented their chief god and goddess, Ra and Isis.
