When was fast food first introduced?

Did you know there are more than 300,000 fast food restaurants in the United States? Fast food is so popular because it is convenient, predictable, and fast. Fast food has become a part of our busy lifestyles. But, nutrition experts point out, fast food is often high in calories, sodium, fat and cholesterol. This does not mean fast food is bad. But it does mean you should fit fast food into a balanced, healthy diet.

The sausage itself has been around since 900 BC; however, the hot dog was introduced during the Middle Ages, in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. A German butcher, Johann Geurghehner, developed a sausage that resembled a hound or hunting dog, which become known as the frankfurter or ‘dachshund sausage’.

Fact File:

In 1987 the city of Frankfurt celebrated the 500th birthday of the hot dog in that city. It is said that the frankfurter was developed there in 1484, five years before Christopher Columbus set sail for the new world.
