The Nebra Sky Disk – Ancient Map of the Stars

The Nebra Sky Disc (1600 BC) is the earliest-known space map and the oldest-known portable astronomical instrument. The 12-inch bronze disk weighing 2.2 kgs has a blue-green patina inlaid with gold symbols interpreted as a sun or full moon, a lunar crescent and stars. Two golden arcs along the sides mark the angle between the solstices. Another arc at the bottom surrounded with multiple strokes is interpreted as a Solar Barge with numerous oars or as the Milky Way. The disk, found at a site near Nebra, Germany, has been dated back to the European Bronze Age. It is included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register as “one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century.”
