What is freezer burn?

It’s those grayish-brown leathery spots that appear on food that has been frozen for too long. Freezing helps to prevent food for long periods without it decaying. However, if the food is kept for a prolonged period or is improperly packaged, it may develop a condition called freezer burn.

It occurs when moisture in the outer layers of the food evaporates into the freezer air through a process of chemical sublimation. As a result, grayish-brown leathery spots appear on the food.

While, food affected by freezer burn is not harmful to eat, its flavour and texture get adversely affected. Freezer burn cannot be reversed and it is advisable to remove the affected portions before consuming.
