My parents’ dream of seeing me as a doctor

I’m a student of class 9. I want to take journalism as my career but my parents dream of seeing me as a doctor. I’ve tried several times to confide in them and tell them about my dreams and future plans but they don’t seem to be satisfied. I don’t want to hurt them because they have always done the best for me though we belong to a middle class family. Should i forget about my dream and pursue the career which my parents have selected for me or should I go against the will of my parents and choose journalism as my career?

You should quite keen on becoming a journalist instead of a doctor, so you must be feeling quite frustrated that your parents don’t share your dreams for your future.

If your mind is quite made up, you need to both develop your skills in journalism, and also be knowledgeable about a wide variety of subject areas. Develop your skills by contributing to the school magazine; teen magazines and newspapers; and take part in essay contests and more. Build your writing portfolio or blog. If you do well in these, it will then be easier to convince your parents that this is where your talents lie.

Parents want their children to have a secure future – both in terms of earnings and safety. If you can help them to see that you will be able to earn well in the field and that it is a respectable profession to be in, they will find it easier to see your point of view.

They want me to live according to their wishes

I’m a normal teenager who wishes for a normal life. My problem is my parents want me to live according to their wishes. They never want to know about my dreams. They just want my safety to the point where they enrolled me in a girl’s college with subjects that I don’t want. I get that they are my parents and want my safety; but what kind of parents want their children to do what they want? They never lived like that but why do they put such pressure on me? I feel like running away from everything and living a life by myself for which I don’t have the courage. What can I do?

Seems like you are feeling very stifled by your parents’ over-protectiveness and disregard for your dreams. Looks like you don’t enjoy open communication with them.

You’re adult now, and it would help you if you took a more practical stand. First, take a good look at yourself. Are you clear about what you really want? Are your dreams practical and conventional, or will you be breaking out in a new direction? Also is safety the only reason they have put you in a girl’s college?

Then, take the initiative to meet with your parents. Ask them to help you understand why they have done what they have, and hear them out without judging. Be open to the idea that they may have a better understanding of you than you realize, and what you may be doing right now might turn out to be rocking future for you!

If you’re not convinced, then calmly explain that you do have your own hopes and dreams. Explain your future plans to them in detail keeping in mind your own safety. Ask for their support. You might just be surprised.

What are the courses that I can choose after +2 (Commerce)? Is there any good scope in hotel management?

I am now doing +2 (Commerce). I don’t know what to choose next. My family is not financially stable to send me for higher  studies. What are the courses that I can choose after this? Is there any good scope in hotel management?

After 10+2 Commerce, you can go for courses in Chartered Accountancy or Company Secretary, etc. These are postal courses and take a minimum of four years of thorough studies. But if you are not interested in any specific field and even do not want to study further, then it is better that you start working. Many jobs are available for 10+2 passouts.

There is a great demand for data entry jobs. Many small and medium size companies need data entry operators. The only skill you need here is a good typing speed and basic knowledge of some software like word processing, database, spreadsheet, etc. You must be able to type 40 to 50 words per minute. If you do not have a good speed, then you can practice on your PC and you will learn in a few weeks.

A call centre job is also good for both 10+2 as well as college dropouts. Here you need to talk in the local language of the state. But for international call centres, you must have good English speaking skills. Because of outstanding, call centre jobs are available in abundance. You can give a walk-in interview.

If you’re good in convincing, you may become a sales representative or network marketer. In this job, you have to sell products to customers. Companies like Reliance, Airtel, McDonalds, etc., always require sales representatives.

Network marketing is also like marketing, but here you have to build a team under you. You might have heard about companies like Amway. There are many network marketers who are not educated but make millions. Here, first, you have to become a member of big network marketing company and then you have to get in more members under you. As your members grow you make more money.

If you are physically fit and strong, you may go for the post of constable in the police department. The Indian Army also offer posts like soldier, clerk, soldier, technical, etc. after joining the army at a lower rank, you can appear in different exams and become an officer. Railways, Forest department, Indian Navy and Coast Guard also offer opportunities to 10+2 pass outs.

Every year the Staff Selection Commission conducts combined higher secondary level examination for filling posts like data entry operator, lower division clerk and stenos. You should have basic knowledge of computers and good typing skills. The selection is based on the performance in the objective exam followed by a skill test. In government sectors, once you get into the job, you will be paid regularly and handsomely. Job security and promotions make it more attractive.

I am a student of class 11. I have opted for PCB with Economics. I am not very sure of doing MBBS. I want to know the career options available in Biology and their scope in India.

A study in biology provides a foundation for various healthcare careers: physicians, dentists, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, medical technologists, college professors and administrators, research scientists, nursing, veterinary doctor, agriculturist, nutritionist, pharmacist and bio-medical engineer, etc. but besides these, there are several other general career areas for biologists. The growing emphasis on environmental preservation is creating another career path for biologists: conservation, wildlife study and occupational safety.

A bachelor’s degree in one of the fields of biology is sufficient for advanced technician jobs in the medical field, lab/research assistant positions, or testing and inspection jobs. They work as part of a big project team. They may operate laboratory equipment, design and construct new equipment, make drawings, build models and assist in interpretation of results.

Large industries that deliver healthcare products seek biology graduates for manufacturing, marketing and sales positions. Some biological science graduates work in management or administration, planning programmes for food and drug testing or managing a botanical garden. An undergraduate degree can also be used for non-technical work in writing, illustration, sales, and photography.

Those having an interest in computers can also go for Bioinformatics, a field which promises to change the way we diagnose and treat diseases and provide healthcare. This is a relatively new discipline in which huge discoveries are being made and are waiting to be made.

After my +2 (Computer Science), I did Polytechnic (Computers). I am now doing B.Com. (Co-operations). What are the courses that I can choose after this to get a good and secure job?

Nowadays almost all organizations and companies are reliant on computers. So, all companies require computer engineers for development, maintenance and repair of computer systems.

With a polytechnic diploma, you can find jobs in Government PSUs (Public Sector Companies) and also private companies. Some of the PSUs are GAIL (India) Limited, BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), Coal India Limited, BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited), HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation limited), SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited), NTPC Limited, Indian Oil, ONGC Limited, RailTel Corporation, if interested. You can work as a Junior Engineer in the railways. For the notification and advertisement of recruitment, you need to go to the official website of the concerned PSU.

If you have done a 3-year diploma in Computer Engineering, then you may go for B.Tech/B.E. in CSE. Candidate can go directly to the 2nd year of the course via lateral entry.

I am interested in digital interior designing

I am a student of Std X. I am interested in digital interior designing. I want to know whether there are any diploma courses available for digital interior designing. Please list the colleges in Pune which offer this course.

A digital interior designer is an interior designer who works on multimedia and graphics projects and applies his or her technical and creative skills to this field. If you are technically apt and visually inventive, a career as a digital designer may be an excellent choice.

A good course in interior design also teaches students the best ways t convey messages through a digital medium. Organizing information and presenting it in a way that connects with an audience is the ultimate goal of good design, but students also learn how to use specialized programs to complete their tasks, including Adobe Flash, Photoshop, Autodesk, Adobe Illustrator, Google SketchUp and more.

The best institutes to do this course are National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and School of Interior Design, Centre for Environmental Planning and technology University, Ahmedabad. There are many institutes offering these courses in Pune. Some of these are MIT Institute of Design, Pune; Pearl Academy; iNIFD, Pune.

I want to focus on my studies and my family

I met a boy on Instagram. He proposed to me one day and we entered into a relationship. We never met. We just used to chat for some time every day. Everything was fine until one day I fell in love with another boy. As my new crush and I became close I blocked my boyfriend saying that my family had come to know about him. After two months I started talking to him again. Now I realize that making a boyfriend online is not right and can be unsafe. As I do not have any boy in my life now, not even my crush, I want to stop all this and focus on my studies and my family. I don’t know how to tell him that I cannot talk to him anymore. I’m afraid he might get upset with me about breaking up again and again and try to cause me harm or leak my number in anger or frustration. What should I do? I want to get away from him as soon as possible!

At the tender age of 14 you are running very fast from one relationship to another and making mistakes in your relationships. You started with a boy you met on Instagram and chatted with him every day. Subsequently you made another boyfriend online and decided to stop the old relationship for the new one. The result is that you do not have a boyfriend now. This negative experience should teach you to stop running after love dreams, which you are not able to handle. The decision you made to stop all this and focus on your studies and your family is the right one and I encourage you to follow it. You will never repent for having done that. Stop chatting online and those boys will forget you and move on.

I’m addicted to social networking sites

I’m addicted to social networking sites. Although I don’t have a personal phone I still have accounts on many social networking sites. I often operate them from my mother’s phone secretly in spite of warnings from my parents. I am not able to focus on my studies and next year is my board exam. Please help me to snap out of it.

Your addiction to social networking sites is playing a negative role in your life. In spite of warnings from your parents you disobey them and often operate these sites secretly from your mother’s phone. You have lost interest in your studies though next year is your board exam. If you continue in this way you will cause pain to yourself and your parents, because you may fall in these exams and be unable to achieve a good education. This will make it difficult for you in future to get a good job. You have to make a choice between entertaining yourself with social networking sites and not achieving a good position in life or concentrate on your studies and be successful in life, making your parents proud of you. Addictions are always bad and I strongly advise you to get out of this addiction which will help your life.

He has no more feelings for me

I’m a degree student in a relationship with a boy three years older than me. We live in different cities due to our studies and meet each other only once or twice a year. Both of us take our studies seriously and respect each other’s space. Now it’s been six months and he has not responded to my calls and text messages properly. He makes excuses when I try to talk to him. He doesn’t like conversing on the phone so I don’t call him often but he complains for not calling him again. I’m confused as to how to respond to him. Sometimes I feel he has no more feelings for me and perhaps loves someone else. I thought of moving on but I love him a lot and I’m ready to respect his own time. But I’m growing more anxious now. I need your advice.

You are in a relationship with a boy three years older than you and live in different cities, therefore can “meet each other only once or twice a year”. Six months have passed but he has not responded to your calls properly and “he doesn’t like conversing on the phone”. Besides “he makes excuses when you try to talk to him”. This behaviour could mean that he is busy with his studies and does not want to waste time. This could also mean that his feelings for you have changed and he wants to move on your studies and let him make up his mind about his relationship with you. The day he will send you the message: “I love you so much”, you can understand that your love for each other can grow and reach a proper conclusion in a permanent relationship.

I want to make a career in Psychology but I don’t know about its scope in Dehra Dun and Delhi. Please guide me.

A psychology degree opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Psychology graduates have knowledge of the assessment of personality, intelligence and attitudes, interviewing techniques, questionnaire design and analysis, child development, and methods of teaching and learning. This knowledge can be applied to an enormous number of occupations and profession like market research, social work, personnel management and career guidance. They may also be involved in investigations such as crime detection and lie detection.

You need at least a Master’s degree for professional work in which you might administer and interpret psychological tests, counsel college students with educational or emotional problems, or help the handicapped find suitable training and employment. Some firms employ their own psychologists who are always on the lookout to improve methods of training, working conditions, method of salesmanship, etc.

With a doctorate’s degree, they can qualify for more responsible research and counseling positions in hospitals, clinics and other health facilities. Research psychologists examine the behaviour of individuals in order to understand and explain how and why they act as they do.

The work of a psychologist should not be confused with that of the psychiatrist who are medical practitioners specializing in the prevention and cure of psychological disorders. The training of a psychiatrist usually takes a much different track when compared with psychologists.

I’m a student of Std X. I want to be a paediatrician. What steps should I take to pursue this?

Becoming a paediatrician or a child specialist requires 5-6 years of training beyond an MBBS degree. First, clear 10+2 examination with Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Then appear in a competitive exam to get admission into MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). This is a 5 ½ year course which includes a one-year internship period as well.

After MBBS, you should go for 2 years PG Diploma for 3 years M.D. in Paediatrics. The selection of a candidate for PG courses is done through entrance examinations. After completion of M.D./M.S., it is better to study further and do a super specialization.

Admissions for 100% seats of MBBS/BDS in various medical/dental colleges, except AIIMS and JIPMER Puducheery, is done through the common entrance test called NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). This year, NEET was conducted on 7 May 2017.

Pediatricians need the same skills other specialists do, such as good communication skills, problem-solving and critical thinking. But they also need to have an extra level of understanding when working with children.

Career in Genetic Engineering

I am a student of Std IX and I want to be a genetic engineer and work abroad as there is not much scope in India. Please tell me about the institutions that would help me pursue a career in Genetic Engineering. How should I prepare for admission into these institutions?

Genetic Engineering is the process of adding new DNA to a living organism through artificial methods. Some examples of genetic engineering are faster-growing trees, bigger, longer-lasting tomatoes, glow in the dark cats, golden rice, plants that fight pollution, banana vaccine, etc.

Students with backgrounds in Biotechnology, Biological Sciences, etc., are eligible to apply for genetic engineering courses at the graduate level such as M.Sc., M.Tech. and Ph.D. Since Genetic Engineering is not offered as a standalone programme, most students pursue higher studies in Biotechnology, Biological Sciences, etc., and specialize in Genetic Engineering.

To pursue a Master’s course in a reputed university in India, all you need is the GATE/JAM scores. For universities abroad, your GPA, GRE/TOFL scores and research projects are very important. Since Genetic engineering is a highly research-oriented field, a Ph.D. degree is imperative if you want to climb up the ladder at work.

Some good institutes in India are Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. After pursuing courses in Genetic Engineering, you can work in the medical and pharmaceutical industries, research and development departments, agricultural sector, genetic engineering firms, chemical companies, etc. With the increasing number of biotech firms in India, the future scope in genetic engineering is good in India as well as abroad. USA and UK are at the forefront of research in genetic engineering.

Media & Mass Communication

What is Media & Mass Communication? What are the career opportunities in the film and advertisement industry? What is the possibility of taking an MBA in Communication Management after this degree?

The term Mass Communication refers to the process of delivering and transferring of messages and news to a large group of people using different forms of media like newspapers, radio, internet and television. Many institutes offer a 3-year-Bachelor’s and 2-year—Master’s degree programme in Mass Communication. It is also known by various names like Communication Studies, Media Studies, Communication Science, Communication Arts and Media Science, Communication Arts and Media Science. For an MBA in any specialization, you require a Bachelor’s degree in any field.

Career opportunities in any field depend on your capability and the courses you’ve done. For a qualified person in a specific field, the scope may be very good, but the same field will not offer the same opportunity to an unqualified person. So try to focus on your capability, aptitude and interest and go for the courses, and hence career, which is suitable to you. Don’t opt for a career just because someone says that it has good opportunities.
