Snapchat launched its first Indian Snap Game, Ludo Club, a custom-made version of the popular strategy board game Ludo. The game allows users to play with their friends on Snapchat. Snapchat chose Ludo for its first Snap Game as the game was one of the most played games in India in 2020. Snap Games were developed with the idea that friends can play and chat together in real-time. The Games are available for users within the chat of the Snapchat app and users can directly play the game from the chat itself.

The Ludo Club will be available on both Android and iOS version of Snapchat. The steps will be the same for both platforms. In addition to Ludo Club, you can also play several other games such as Bitmoji paint, Aquapark Multiplayer Edition, Color Galaxy, Find My Bitmoji, Subway Surfers Airtime, and Snow Time, and more.

The company has been adding new games ever since this feature was introduced. The aim has been to drive more users which seem to be working for the brand. Snapchat has been not just focusing on board games but other features as well to enhance the user experience on its platform.

Mictic: Wearable Wristband Translates Gestures, Movements Into Music In Real-Time

Everyone plays “air” instruments once in a while. Mictic is a wearable wristband that turns your gestures and movements into musical tones and sound effects in real-time. Mictic claims to be the first wearable device that is a true musical instrument. The wristbands translate your arm movements into included instrument sounds like electronic guitar, drums, cell, violin, and genre-based soundscapes like EDM, hip-hop and rock. The wristbands contain sensors that detect movement and motion. You can connect the sensors that detect movement and motion. You can connect the sensors with your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Each Mictic wristband includes an inertial measurement unit (IMU) designed to track the wearer's movement and gestures. When paired with the Mictic app, running on a smartphone — Apple iOS at launch, with Android support to follow — and communicating with the wristband via Bluetooth Low Energy, the data gathered by the wearable is translated into musical tones or sound effects - no experience required. For more advanced users, the wristbands can also be used as a MIDI controller.

The company is currently working with prototype wristbands, based on mbientLab's popular nine-axis Bluetooth IMU module with 3D-printed housings. The production version, though, will be based on a custom PCB — though it's unlikely to differ much in specification from mbientLab's offering.

What are the negative and positive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Positive impact

CO2 Emission

Reports that emerged late 2020 showed that the pandemic did have an impact on the CO2 emission last year. Widespread shutdowns, drastic reduction in industrial activities and commuter traffic led to significant drop in the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In November 2020, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) estimated that the annual global CO2 emission reduced 4.2-7.5 % in 2020. April 2020 saw a drop of about 17% in global monthly CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, but the annual CO2 emissions for the globe were only 7% lower than they were in 2019. However, the WMO called it a blip on the planet’s uncontrolled emission scenario. Scientists pointed out the Earth’s atmosphere has a heavy concentration of greenhouse gases, including CO2. The temporary reduction in emission due to the pandemic would not curb global warming and resultant climate change. However, we can consider this a positive impact because the pandemic has shown us that it is not impossible to reduce CO2 emission and it has offered us many lessons on Nature conservation – lessons, albeit learnt the hard way.

Pollution

Besides CO2, the concentration of other pollutants such as carbon monoxide, NO2 and PM2.5 also saw a sharp reduction in major cities of the world last year.

Water quality

Water quality too improved in 2020. For the first time in decades, the water of river Ganga was found to be fit enough for drinking as per a study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. Scientists attributed it to the lockdown induced by the pandemic. There was 500% reduction in sewage and industrial effluents, and human activities in the vicinity of the river were almost nil. Studies conducted in the U.S., European countries, and China had also found an improvement in water quality in the rivers and lakes of their respective countries.

Less noise

With industries and traffic falling silent for a major part of the pandemic, there has been a reduction in noise pollution. A short-term study conducted in Pune last year showed that commercial areas witnessed the maximum drop from 74.56 decibels (dB) in March 2020 to 66.55 in April 2020, and residential areas saw it drop from 49.75 dB to 47.48 dB and silent zones from 49.53 dB to 47.11 dBIn Kanpur, the average noise levels before and during the lockdown were found to be in the range of 44.85 dB to 79.57 dB and 38.55 dB to 57.79 dB respectively. Similar reduction in noise was also found in other parts of the world. However, it is to be remembered that these improvements won’t last if the world goes back to its pre-pandemic ways.

Wildlife

After several early cases of COVID-19 were linked to a wet market in China, wildlife trade became central to discussions on public health. Countries such as China and Vietnam acted quickly to introduce large-scale prohibitions of wildlife trade. China upgraded the legal protections for pangolins to the same status as the nation’s beloved panda, prohibiting nearly all domestic trade and use. This is among the biggest positive outcomes of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the lockdown brought wildlife to the cities. Animals in urban areas were exploring empty streets and waterways. Those in the nature reserves and parks caught some quiet time without the disturbances from tourists. Even sea turtles were spotted returning to areas they once avoided to lay their eggs, all due to the lack of human interference. Scientists reported that plants were growing better because there was cleaner air and water.

Negative impact

Biomedical waste

The management of biomedical waste such as personal protective equipment (PPE), gloves, face masks, head cover, among other gear and medical equipment used by both healthcare providers and patients is the biggest challenge that governments around the world are facing. According to the data shared by Central Pollution Control Board, India generated over 18,000 tonnes of COVID-19-related biomedical waste between June and September last year. India’s Covid vaccination drive is also seeing thousands of syringes being disposed of every day. The Indian government has defined standards, protocols and guidelines for different categories of biomedical waste but unsafe disposal of such waste in open dustbins is not uncommon in the country.

Plastic is back

Just a couple of years ago, the world woke up to the problem of plastic and was taking measures to find an alternative to single-use plastic. Many countries and States of India had restrictions on the usage of single-use plastic. But those commitments were thrown out the window when the pandemic hit us. Moreover, plastic products play a significant role in protecting people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials such as PPE suits, face shields, masks and gloves are plastic, and they are meant to be disposed of after single use. Besides, the fear of surface contamination has made disposal cups, cutleries, and plastic bags make a swift comeback. The amount of plastic waste generated worldwide since the COVID-19 outbreaks estimated at 1.6 million tonnes / day. This could cause a surge in plastics washing up on the ocean coastlines and littering the seabed.

Deforestation and poaching

Many people have lost their jobs and livelihood due to COVID-19 and this has contributed to illegal tree felling, illegal mining and wildlife poaching. There are reports of increased deforestation in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Areas that are economically dependent on tourism face reduced resources as tourism has come to a halt. This is leaving animals in the reserves with much less protection. There has been an increase in wildlife poaching – either to provide food for hungry families or for illegal sales.

How do you use the original audio reel on Instagram?



Found song or audio clip you like on another user’s Reel and want to make one using the same audio/music? Just tap the music and select ‘Use Audio’.



On Instagram Reels you can upload your own audio clip or use music tracks from Instagram’s audio library. With the new update, you can now save audio clips used on Reels. The process is the same as saving posts on Instagram. Tap on the audio, and then select the save icon on the top right corner of the screen. You can then go to your saved posts on Instagram, and find all the audio files clubbed under an ‘audio’ folder.



Now when you make a new Reels video you can use audio from your saved collection. Instagram lets you use audio from other Reels but you have to do it at that time, and not save the clip in your library. The new audio page created on your saved collection can also be shared over DM. You’ll see the DM icon appear on the audio page of Reels made using that particular audio clip.

Who created the pixel?



American computer scientist Russell Kirsch revolutionised digital images with his invention of the pixel and then the world’s first digital photograph. He is also recognized as the developer of the first digital image scanner. Pixels are digital dots used to display photos, videos and more on phone and computer screens. In 1957 Kirsch created 2x2-inch, 172 x 172 pixel image of his baby son. Using a device he created at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards, this was the first image ever scanned into a computer and was made up of just 31,000 pixels (the latest iPhone captures images containing 12 million pixels). Kirsch made his pixels square which meant that image elements were not as smooth as real life, giving rise to them “pixelated”. Kirsch’s discovery laid the groundwork for digital photography, satellite imagery, CT scans, barcodes, virtual reality, and more. 91-year-old Kirsch passed away in August 2020 in Oregon (USA).



Kirsch later developed a method to smooth out images by using pixels with variable shapes instead of the squares. Initially, the images were binary, capturing only black or white, but Kirsch and his team discovered that by scanning the image multiple times at different thresholds they could create a grayscale image by stacking multiple scans, as per DPreview.



This technology allowed Kirsch and his team to develop algorithms that laid the foundations for image processing and image pattern recognition. Kirsch’s invention also helped NASA with its earliest space explorations, including the Apollo Moon landings.

Audio trumps camera in smartphone buying decision



Audio quality is the most important feature consumers consider while buying a smartphone, according to a report by CyberMedia Research. The group surveyed respondents aged 18-40 across six cities in India. Consumers ranked battery life and camera quality as the next important features while physical appearance of the smartphone ranked lowest. Smartphone users consume audio mostly through listening to music on popular audio OTT platforms (94%), watching video, movies, OTT content, or videos on social networks (96%).

These consumers use smartphones for more than 20 hours a week, and are heavy users of streaming services and gaming, the report said.



More than 90% consumers use the smartphone’s audio for listening to music on popular audio OTT platforms and for viewing videos on social media.



The survey highlighted that these users expect audio to be an immersive experience while less heavy users consider voice and dialogue quality as top priority.

Billed as “the world’s smallest Android 10 4G smartphone”, the Unihertz Jelly 2 is roughly the size of a credit card, with a 3-inch, 326-ppi screen, an 8 MP front camera abd 16 MP rear camera, and weighs just 110 gms. It supports dual SIM cards, microSD expansion of its 6GB internal storage, USB-C charging for its 2,000 mAh battery, NFC support for contactless payment, GPS, and nearly every possible band of LTE, plus fingerprint unlocking and 128 GB storage. This mini smartphone is designed to act as a companion device to your regular cell, for times when a large smartphone would be inconvenient or when taking a break from your full-sized smartphone.



Starting at the front, we have the three-inch LCD screen, which is 51% larger than the first Jelly display. Colors look great on the display and text is crisp and clear. I was very surprised to see how readable this tiny display is and I never had a problem reading content on the display.



The headset speaker and front facing camera are above the display. Below the viewable screen we see a circle in the senter with two dots on either side, indicating where the haptic buttons are for back, home, and the task switcher. Obviously, the phone is very easy to manipulate with a single hand thanks to its size and the responsive display.



It is a great phone to take running and with many watches not supporting GPS, such as the Fitbit Versa 2 or new Polar Unite, GPS and music served up from the Jelly 2.0 is something to consider. It's a solid emergency phone, as long as you keep a battery pack around to top off the small capacity battery for extended use.

RoboHon: This little bot acts as your smartphone



Sharp’s RoboHon is a prototype robot that doubles as a smartphone.



The RoboHon (a mix of the words robot and phone) stands just 8 inches high and packs a camera and a 2-inch LCD screen on its back. There’s also a mic, speaker and a facial and voice recognition system.



It runs Android 5.0 and supports 3G, 4G LTE and wi-fi connectivity options. It can follow voice commands to place a call, take a picture and display it through its projector. It lets you know when there’s a call for you (“Hey! There’s a call for you.”); reads out text messages and lets you reply verbally to them. It also acts as an alarm and can tell you what you have planned on your calendar.



It is basically the personification of the idea that your phone is your best friend.

Phazon has created the world’s first one-size fits all earbuds.



The company says there’s an inner-ear pattern that everyone shares and that by giving the earbuds a little twist once they’re in the ear, wearers can ensure they won’t fall out while jogging, working out or even swimming. The earbuds are wireless and use Bluetooth to link to your mobile device for music streaming and receiving phone calls. Its internal rechargeable battery can be charged to 80% in only 20 minutes using a USB charger; the charge lasts upto 6 hours.



One of its most interesting features is the one that only works when they’re not being worn — if a user has misplaced their earbuds, the Phazon app can tell them how far away they are and point the user in the right direction.

Uber's redesigned app will include language translation



The introduction of the translation feature will help reduce any miscommunication that can happen when riders and drivers have different preferred languages or if you’re using Uber in a different country. Previously, messages sent from drivers to riders would always appear in that driver’s preferred language, whether or not this was the rider’s language. The new feature allows both parties to translate messages into their own language, and the app supports over 100 different languages for them to communicate in.



Uber has recently introduced a number of new tools to improve its rider app. The San Francisco-based company recently revealed that it would start using hyper-local weather data from ClimaCell to improve ETA estimates, and it’s piloting a new feature that allows customers to request pet-friendly cars. Uber also announced this month that it was opening to telephone bookings in the U.S.

How to change TikTok username?



When you create an account on TikTok, the platform assigns you a username, usually based on your email address. If you’re not happy with your random handle, you can change it. Tap ‘Me’ in the navigation bar, then go to Edit>Username, and type in a new one. Tap Save>Set username, and on the pop-up. Double-check your choice before you do so, as you won’t be able to change your username for another 30 days.



Of course, one of the real purposes of having a username is as part of your online security. Therefore, TikTok and, indeed, most online sites, don't make it too easy to change your username. They need to make sure that it is really you and not some imposter trying to gain access to your account.



Site administrators typically use usernames to help keep their site in order, helping to keep appropriate conversations and other posts in and spam out. While you may find it annoying having to log into TikTok and your other accounts often, particularly with a new or updated device, it at least ensures that everything runs smoothly and keeps those trying to commit online mischief away from your account.



Of course, there is another reason why usernames are essential. They are an insight into you as a person. They represent your online persona. 



Some people put much time and energy into coming up with the ideal username for their personality. This can be particularly challenging when you consider that everybody has to have a unique username.



Other people don’t care less, and are happy to accept TikTok’s suggestions – Mike789 or Miley567 are typical examples of this. 



Of course, some people deliberately go for enigmatic usernames, perhaps even a random jumble of letters and numbers to confuse those people who prefer a neater, tidier approach to name their accounts.

The smart planter with feelings



The Lua Smart Plant Pot transforms your favourite houseplant into a virtual pet combined with the thrill of actually keeping something real alive. An accompanying app lets users generate information specific to that plant. Lua uses a range of sensors to monitor moisture, light and temperature and detect how the plant is feeling, and conveys that by way of a cartoon face on a 2.4 inch LED screen. For example, if light exposure isn’t enough a vampire face will appear. What is solar wind?

ANSWER 1 Solar wind is a combination of electrically charged stream of atomic particles – electrons, protons, with small proportions of heavier nuclei and the entrained solar magnetic field emitted from the sun’s atmosphere. E. N. Parker in 1958 showed that due to the very high temperatures of the corona the pressure exerted results in an outflow of material into the interplanetary space in all directions in a phenomenon he called “solar wind”. Solar wind is an extremely radially outward at a speed of 500 kilometres per second which is variable in response to the varying solar activity. The particles normally takes about 4 to 5 days to reach earth. The radial flow of the solar wind and the rotation of the sun, wind the solar magnetic field into a spiral which makes an angle of 45 degrees at the earth’s orbit.
