I wist to be a Hollywood singer.

I’m a student of Std IX. I want to take up music as y career. I want to be a Hollywood singer. I have been the topper of our local music school from 2012 onwards. I have also won several competitions. Which institutes can I attend after Std X, and the necessary criteria required for admission. I’m from a middle class family so are there any scholarships available?

Hollywood is the destination for singers who hope to achieve success in any possible genre. There’s no completely certain path to become a world-famous singer, but here are some things you can do to increase your odds.

  • Determine your type of voice. Most singers in Hollywood are well schooled on their vocal abilities. You need to know your vocal abilities before gathering music that will best display your own special sound,

  • Study music. Take up an instrument, such as the keyboard or guitar, to make your singing performances even more entertaining.

  • Record and market your music.

  • Be determined and persistent. There’s a lot of competition out there. Most successful singers spend years working on their voice and playing low-paying gigs before they make it big. Don’t lose sight of your goal, and resolve to be patient.

  • Sing in public whenever possible. Even if you don’t get spotted by a musician right away, you’re practicing your stage presence and getting used to being in front of a crowd.

  • Network. Make connections with other musicians. You never know who might want to collaborate with you in the future.

  • Learn how to handle criticism. Accept rejection and move on.

Air Force after XII?

I am a bit confused about what to choose as a career after Std XII. Presently, I am studying in Std XII with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Computers as my subjects. The main reason for my confusion is that I don’t want to opt for B.Tech., and want to go into fields related to the air force or navy. I just wanted your advice as to what should I go with as my career after 12th. - Liza.

Dear Liza, If you want to fly high in the sky or dream of being an Air Warrior of the IAF, then you need to clear AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test). It is held twice a year. After clearing AFCAT, you can opt for flying/technical/ground duty. Post-graduates can go for the meteorology branch that does not require AFCAT. Candidates should be graduates in their respective fields with Physics and Maths in 10+2.

The Indian Navy recruits girls for the following branches of the Navy as Short Service Commissioned Officers: ATC, Observer, Law, Logistics, Education, Naval Architecture. Both the navy and the air force recruit candidates with graduation.

I want to become a professor

I am studying in Std XII with PCM as my main subjects. I have a great interest in nuclear physics and I love Maths. I want to become a professor. What steps do I need to take to achieve this? I have planned to join a B.Sc./Int. M.Sc. course after school. Please give information about the good colleges in India that offer the course with equal importance to student activities on campus. What entrance exams do I need to crack? Will University of Delhi be a good option?

Graduation/post-graduation in Mathematics is offered by most of the universities in India. A master’s degree is the minimum requirement to teach at the college level; however, universities prefer a Ph.D. and also offer extra increments to these candidates. For a Ph.D., you need to clear National Eligibility Test (NET)/ State-Level Eligibility Test (SLET).

After B.Sc. (Hons), you can also apply for an Integrated M.Sc.- Ph.D. degree. For this integrated programme the best places are: Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai; The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMsc), Chennai; Harish Chandra research Institute (HRI), Allahabad; Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Pune, Mohali, Kolkata, Trivandrum and Bhopal, and at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) AT Bhubaneswar.

To enter the field of nuclear physics you should have a good grounding in Physics. So you could start with an undergraduate degree in Physics and go for post-graduation with this specialization. Some of the institutes offering such courses are IIT Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Madras and Roorkee; The Indian Institute of Scienecs, Bangalore; The Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata; TATA Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai; Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar; Nuclear science Centre, New Delhi.

I am a student of B.Sc. final year with Biology. I want to know what career I can choose after my graduation for a good salary package or should I pursue my M.Sc. degree? If M.Sc., then from which col

A bachelor’s degree in one of the fields of biology is sufficient for advanced technician jobs in the medical field, lab/research assistant positions, or testing and inspection jobs. You’ll work as part of a big project team. Large industries that deliver health care products seek biology graduates for manufacturing marketing and sales positions.

But for other positions in the scientific field, for example, jobs in management, sales, inspection, service, and some in applied research, you need to have an advanced degree. You may be involved in planning and administrating programmes for testing food and drugs or directing activities at zoos or botanical gardens. You may test and inspect foods, drugs, and other products or write for technical publications. After a few years of experience, you may work as a consultant to business firms or to the government. A Ph.D. is needed for college teaching, independent research, and for advancement to administrative positions.

What career options and further studies does Arts offer?

I am in Std XI and have opted for Arts with Geography. What career options and further studies does Arts offer? I’m interested in doing an MBA or Economics (Honours), and finally join IIM. Please guide me.

Geography is a very small profession. Graduates in Geography find work in Cartography, oceanography and land survey. Some graduates go for jobs in practical conversation, in parks or outdoor recreation. Those with a Master’s degree get involved in urban and regional planning and development, housing development, town planning, transport planning, environmental planning and monitoring.

Remote Sensing is a new technology widely used in the survey and management of natural resources and environment. Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is another latest field, which utilizes the skills of a geographer and a computer professional. The GIS generated map can be constructed to show layers of the physical features, such as telephone and electrical power lines, or to show non-physical features, such as population density or income distributions.

For doing an MBA, you should be a graduate in any stream. Admission into IIMs requires good preparation.

I am a student of Std XII in the Commerce stream (with Computer Science). I wanted to know about the courses available for a non-Maths student in the best colleges of Delhi University.

Since you have a Commerce background, you can go for courses like Chartered Accountancy (CA), Cost & Works Accountancy (CWA), Company Secretaryship (CS), and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Otherwise, you may go for regular courses like Bachelor of Business Administration/Bachelor of Business Studies or Bachelor of Financial and Investment Analysis (BFIA) or a course in Business economies. The Delhi School of Economics offers a B.A. (Economics) as well as a Master’s in economics.

I have a great passion for flying and I want to become an airline pilot.

I am student of Std XI with PCM. I have a great passion for flying and I want to become an airline pilot. But I’m very tense about my weak eyesight. I wear glasses. What should I do to become a pilot? What are its requirements and which flying schools are the best?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions amongst people. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) says that you can apply if your eyesight is correctable to 20/20 for distance vision through eyeglasses while 20/40for near vision. One only has to carry an extra set of glasses while flying. There are no other restrictions for people with poor eyesight for becoming pilots.

You need to clear a physical fitness test (tough one), apart from an entrance test exam of the flying schools in India. Even after becoming commercial pilots, they need regular medical check-ups as any health problems can cause cancellation of the license of the pilot.

There are many flying schools all over India, but Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA), Rae Bareli (UP) is the only institute for aviation training run by the government. Entry into IGRUA is through an online written test, interview and pilot aptitude test. The training fee at IGRUA is Rs 32.5 lakh, exclusive of hostel and other fees. Many banks can give loans up to 50%.

Will he break my heart again?

I am in Std XI and in love with a boy from my previous school. We are in a relationship since five months. We don’t get a chance to meet often so after five months he proposed to a girl in his class and broke up with me. The girl rejected his proposal and he came back to me. And now we are again in relationship. But I’m confused as to whether he loves me or not or whether he will break on my heart again. Should I be with him or should I move on?

That boy gets easily infatuated with girls and proposes himself to some of them. He is immature and selfish. Now “he came back” to you and the relationship is going on. There is no guarantee that in future he may not repeat his mistakes. At this point you can continue this relationship at your own risk. Give him a good example of love and care and give him a chance. If he fails again, let him go and move on.

I’m worried about my brother

My younger brother is 13 years old. Since the last 9-10 months he is addicted to playing video games on his cell phone and laptop. He is very moody and rude and whenever my parents take his phone away he doesn’t eat and misbehaves i.e. starts shouting and hitting his parents! He doesn’t concentrate or do any other work, be it studies, prayers or chores. His schedule is school, come home, sit with his phone and then sleep. My parents are having a lot of trouble lately and even I worry about him a lot. He is big enough to understand his priorities. How can I help him?

The responsibility of educating and correcting their children rests, first of all, on the parents. Your parents have probably made the mistake of giving your brother too much too soon: “his cell phone and laptop”. He became selfish, rude and violent: “hitting his own parents”. Obviously your parents and you are having a lot of trouble. At the age of 13 he is not “big enough” to know his duties and respect his family. I suggest at this point that your parents get the help of a psychologist for understanding the root cause of this problem and how to correct it. From your side, help him by giving a good example of respecting your parents and helping them.

I want him back in my life

I’m studying in Std X and had a boyfriend who studied in Std XII. We both were in a relationship for four years. I broke up with him because I got to know that he was cheating on me with another girl and kept me as a second option. After a couple of weeks I learned that the girl had also broken up with him because of the same reason. Now I want him back in my life because I’m incomplete without him. Because of this I’m not able to concentrate on my studies. Please help me.

At the age of 12 you were in a relationship with a boy of 14, the age when children are supposed to play and make friends. Now you are 16 and came to know that he was cheating on you with another girl and that she too “had also broken up with him because of the same reason”. Obviously that boy is immature and selfish, thinking only of his will and pleasure. Give him time to mature and understand his mistakes. Getting him back now in your life may probably cause you more pain and disappointment. In future, if he changes his ways, you may take him back.

I want to be in a relationship with him

I’m a teenager and have fallen for another teen. At first I thought it was infatuation so I ignored the feelings but after years it slipped out that I loved him. We became friends on Facebook four years ago and I learned that we were neighbours. He went to live in another city for higher education. However, he came back after two years. We talk like best friends but I want to be in a relationship with him. He treats me like his girlfriend but still I don’t receive the feeling of “I’m in a relationship”. What should I do?

Four years ago you became friends with a boy on Facebook and you came to know that you were neighbours. After a break of two years you now talk to each other “like best friends” and he treats you “like his girlfriend”. Being a teenager you should be satisfied with this situation and enjoy the beauty of friendship, rather than worrying about some “feeling” that you are not “in a relationship” with him. If for you this means sharing life together in an exclusive and lifelong relationship, you are running too fast, because this can happen only in marriage. Be patient and enjoy the present situation of friendship, which is the best during the teenage. Come to know, understand and accept each other as you are, respecting and helping each other. At this point of time you cannot take final decisions about your future which is in the hands of God. Relax and be happy.

I’m in a long distance relationship

I am a 15-year-old girl. I am in a long distance relationship with a boy who is 18. He says that he loves me but I feel that he considers me as a time pass. This thinking stops me from loving him and causes fights in our relationship. I also think that he is with another girl too but I can’t stop talking to him because I am really attracted to him. Should I break up with him or tell him what I feel about our relationship?

You seem to be confused and unable to carry on “a long distance relationship with a boy who is 18”. You feel that he “considers you as a time pass” and have “fights” with him. You also doubt that “he is with another girl”. This relationship with him is just an attraction, an emotional feeling, also called infatuation, common at the age of 15. You have no experience of love and life; besides you are not in personal contact with him as he is a long distance away. It is better for you to start interacting with young people of your age who are near to you, building good friendships with them, rather than carrying on a dream of love with someone you do not know well and who is far away.

I am tired of being alone

I have never been in a relationship in my life. I feel lonely because all my friends have boyfriends and I don’t. I always feel that I’m not beautiful enough even though I try to be but I’m tired of being alone with no one to share my feelings with. My friends aren’t there when I need them. What should I do?

It is sad to read that you have no one to share your feelings with and therefore you need a boyfriend because your friends aren’t there when you need them. At the age of 15 don’t you have parents and other family members to love and care for you? If you cannot be in a relationship with your own family how can you be in a relationship with a boy of your age who does not have experience of life? Have patience for a few more years and share your problems and difficulties with a adult people whom you trust, before entering into such relationship.

I want to be a herpetologist

I am 15 years old and in Std X. I have decided my future goals. I want to be a herpetologist. But my parents have no hope for me. They are forcing me to take up a career of their choice. Please help me.

There is nothing wrong in developing an interest in some subjects. In your case it is herpetology, which is a branch of zoology concerned with the study of frogs, toads etc. (amphibians) and also reptiles, like snakes, lizards, etc. this interest may or may not necessarily become a lifelong career. At the age of 15 it is too early to decide your “future goals”. Have patience, carry on with your studies and learn about other interesting subjects. Finally, with the help of your teachers and parents, you will be able to decide what to do for the rest of your life.
