I have lost interest in academics

I am in Class XII. My examinations are nearing. But I have lost interest in academics. I spend almost all my time reading my favourite Bengali novels. Sometimes, I decide to study properly with a strict schedule. But the thought of the novel collection distracts me and I begin reading them, wasting my valuable time. My parents and teachers have advised me to stop this habit but I can’t. Please help me.

You are at a point in life when you have to focus on your future. Also, in your teens it is very natural to have your own interests, ideas and choices. But it is important to prioritize your needs. All of us have different interests at each stage of our lives. Only when you prioritize your needs can you decide which one to focus on and act accordingly. You are able to identify your distractions but you are not able to act when directed by someone else. You have to be open to suggestions. Accept that parents and teachers are concerned about you. Do a cost-benefit analysis of your present actions and your future. Identify your distractions and what you would like to do. Elders can only guide you; it is you who must take responsibility for your actions and decide your future. You need not completely refrain from reading novels, but you can restrict the time spent on it. Do not keep the novels in your study area. Set targets to complete your lessons. Let reading novels be an incentive when you complete the work. Schedule your work and appreciate yourself when you complete work. You have control over yourself. Self-control and self-motivation can help you improve and do your best.

Who was first known female Chinese Historian?

The first-known female Chinese historian was born into an illustrious family of writers and philosophers. Ban Zhao was the daughter of Ban Biao, who began working on the history of the Han Dynasty and after his death, his son (and Zhao’s brother) Ban Gu was put on the task of completing this. Ban Gu, who was then the official historian of the empire, was executed for palace fraud in 95 AD. Five years later, the responsibility of finishing this work fell on Ban Zhao, making her immortal in the pages of history.

About Ban Zhao

Ban Zhao born in Anling, Saanxi province of China. She married young – at the age of 14, but lost her husband in a few years. She never remarried and instead, devoted her life to pursuing academics and scholarship.

When Ban Gu was executed, and the dynastic history of the Han empire, Hanshu, was left incomplete, it was up to Ban Zhao to fill in her brother’s shoes and finish that monumental task. She added in the missing bits of Babiao (Eight Tables) and the genealogy of the mother of the emperor, which was not information usually recorded in that time period. Due to this, she became extremely popular in China.

Also, due to her reputation as a scholar and historian, Ban Zhao was invited to teach Empress Deng Sui and other court members, which only made her more politically influential. The empress and her consorts gave her the title “The Gifted One” and soon, she became the Empress’s lady-in-waiting. The empress also continually sought her advice on matters pertaining to her son, Emperor Shang of Han.

Apart from these duties, Ban Zhao was also the royal librarian and is said to have overseen the copying of manuscripts in bamboo and silk onto a recent invention – paper.

Ban Zhao was also a poet and wrote many poems during her time, and also “Lessons for Women”, a treatise that looked into the education of women in the empire. Although the document spoke about a code of conduct for women and quickly became popular all over China, it focused more on how women needed education.

Excerpt

In her book “Nu Jie” (Lessons for Women), Ban Zhao writes about the quality of humility and why it is important for women to embrace it.

On the third day after the birth of a girl the ancients observed three customs: first to place the baby below the bed; second to give her a potsherd [a piece of broken pottery] with which to play; and third to announce her birth to her ancestors by an offering. Now to lay the baby below the bed… should regard it as her primary duty to humble herself before others. To give her potsherds with which to play indubitably signified that she should practise labour and consider it her primary duty to be industrious. To announce her birth before her ancestors clearly meant that she ought to esteem as her primary duty the continuation of the observance of worship in the home.

Some have argued that Ban Zhao’s work could be seen as among the earliest works of feminism. Though “Lessons for Women” may not seem so, scholars point to the fact that Ban Zhao was not only extremely intelligent but also highly influential. She’s believed to have written this work as a guide for women to survive and subtly negotiate the complex demands of society back then, and she did not remarry despite a short marriage, and perhaps couples this freedom with her intelligence to become influential.

Ban Zhao’s grandmother was Ban Jiyeu who lived during the Western Han Dynasty and was a poet and scholar. Jiyeu is the title given to a third-rank palace lady, and her personal name remains unknown. She is best-known for her poem ‘Yuan Ge Xing” or “Song of Resentment”, where she compares herself to an autumn fan that is ignored. It is written in yuefu style – poems composed like folk songs.

What is the career in Mycology?

Most people shudder at the mere mention of fungi. ‘Yuck!’ and ‘eww’ are some of the expressions that these growths usually evoke. Fungi rot our food and furniture, kill our plants and even sometimes grow on us. However, without fungi, the terrestrial ecosystems of planet Earth would not work. Fungi play a big role in the green world because they help break things down. Some types of fungi such as mushrooms even make for delicious food. In fact, they are so important that there is an entire branch of science dedicated to their study. It is called mycology. Mycologists or fungal scientists study fungi including mushrooms, moulds, truffles, yeasts and lichens, found in plants, animals and humans. So far, about 70,000 species of fungi have been discovered, but it is estimated that there are at least 1.5 million species not yet been found! So, if you interested in plant science, the field of mycology can opens doors to a wide of exciting and rewarding careers.

How it works

Mycologists may study mushrooms exclusively or other forms of fungi that can cause problems for humans, plants and animals. Mycologists are also able to determine which fungi are poisonous. Because of this skill set they can offer their assistance to forensic departments as well as the food industry.

Scope

Mycologists can find work in many areas. The importance of fungi in crop growth, plant disease and fermentation means there are jobs available and the food industry. The unique properties of fungi offer many other industrial applications such as detoxifying polluted land while knowledge of medicinal mycology is useful in the pharmaceutical sector. Often mycology also helps police is solving crimes by working with the forensics team. Mycologists are also hired by botanical gardens.

Required skills:

  • Interest in fungi

  • Analytical, problem-solving and mathematical skills

  • Ability to interpret complex scientific data

Branches:

  • Medical Mycology: Finding and studying fungi that causes diseases in humans.

  • Taxonomy: Naming, describing and classifying new and unknown fungi.

  • Food Mycology: Examining fungi that cause food to go bad.

  • Plant Pathology: Studying and controlling fungal diseases in plants.

  • Industrial Mycology: Looking at the ways in which fungi can help in fermentation.

What to study:

There are no undergraduate courses in mycology, so most mycologists begin by earning a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Biology, Botany or Microbiology.

Where:

India:

  • Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore: Mycology is taught in the third semester as part of B.Sc Microbiology.

  • Shri Guru Gobind Singh University, Delhi-NCR: Mycology, Phycology and Virology are part of the first year syllabus for B.Sc Microbiology.

  • Allahabad State UNIVERSITY, Uttar Pradesh: M.Sc Mycology and Plant Pathology.

  • Birsa Agricultural University, Jharkhand: M.Sc Mycology and Plant Pathology.

  • University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai: B.Sc Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology.

Abroad:

I don’t like physics at all! But I like biotechnology

I am in Std. XII (PVB). I want to do my B.Sc. But I don’t like physics at all! But I like biotechnology. Which subjects should I take in B.Sc. for a better future? Is there any scope for biotechnology in Agra? Please give me the names of some good changes in Agra as well.

Biotechnology requires a firm background in science. After completing 10+2, you may go for B.Sc./B.Tech. in Biotechnology/5-year Integrated oriented, you need to go for higher studies. Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, conducts a Combined Biotech Entrance Examination (CEEB) for admission to M.Sc. in Biotechnology for 32 institutes.

Some other institutes are Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information and Biotechnology, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune; Christ University, Bangalore; IIT (Department of Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology), Delhi; Anna University, Centre for Biotechnology, Chennai; Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, Kolkata. Agra does not have any good institute for Biotechnology. Also my suggestion for you is to join a course in the best of institutes and son compromise with the limitation of locality.

I am confused between the two

I am in Std. XII (Humanities) with an interest in history. What are the possible career options in the field of history? I am also interested in advertising and am confused between the two. Please help.

History graduates work in a wide variety of areas, e.g., business, law, politics, social service, and education. These areas may not be directly related to history, but students of history develop valuable skills in research, analysis, and oral and written communication and use this training to work in an environment suitable and use this training to work in an environment suitable for their personalities and interests.

Knowledge of history is also an asset in journalism. Newspapers and journals often give assignments to historians for the preparation of background material to enlighten the public on the historical importance of an event. History is very popular choice for various competitive examinations at state and central level like the civil services.

Advertising is a glamorous, fast-paced, high profile but serious business. An advertising agency utilizes professionals with a wide variety of talents and skills to develop memorable advertisements that promote sales for the client company. It can be a satisfying career for those who enjoy variety, excitement, creative challenges, and competition.

Though advertising offers opportunities to meet high profile people, to see their work in print, and has many perks, it is hard work and the pace is frantic. The deadlines are firm and the field is very stressful. Within the limited time, you need to show creativity and results. It’s a tightrope-walk on an everyday basis.

For a career in advertising, you need to imaginative business-oriented and be able to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing along with an outgoing personality. On the other hand, history-related careers require proficiency in reading comprehension, writing and speaking, ability to analyse historical data and correct research.

I was forced into architecture due to family pressure

I’m currently doing a diploma in interior designing. It’s my second year. However, my interest lies in business. I was forced into architecture due to family pressure and now I’m not able to do well in this stream. Is there any way by which I can opt to do business apart from dropping 2 years? Please help me with this situation.

What type of business do you want to enter? It is always better if you have some professional qualification in related field. Since you’ve already joined a course in interior design, spend one more year and complete the course. After completing it and gaining some experience, you may start your own consultancy. On the contrary, if you do not enjoy design, then you will not be able to flourish in a related business. Think about it; you’re the only one who can decide.

I’m always frightened

I worry about every small thing. I am always frightened. Even before speaking; I check a hundred times whether whatever I’m saying is correct or not. If a teacher scolds me a bit, I feel I have been terribly insulted and avoid going to her class. I am so frightened about being insulted. Please help.

Children and young people need the presence of loving and caring parents in order to feel safe and secure. If, for any reason, parents are not there, it is common to experience anxiety, fear and insecurity. In your letter, you do not write anything about your family; therefore it is not possible to understand the reason of your problems. You could share them with a good and understanding teacher or a family relation in order to get help.

My sister lacks interest in studies

My sister is 18 and is about to go to college. She was never good at studies, but somehow managed to pass Std X and has taken Arts in junior college. She has very low self-esteem and is always dissatisfied with what she has. Due to this she lacks the interest to study. She is lazy and highly distracted. Recently she got a new phone with high speed internet. After that she was always glued to the phone. She has to give her CET exam in a month. And she was not studying. So Mom took her phone away; now she is not talking to anyone in the house including me. We try to talk to her about it but she just does not listen. We ask her what’s going to happen if she fails, but everything we say falls on deaf ears. She doesn’t like it when especially I talk, she thinks just because I’m younger I’m not supposed to. It’s like she know she’s destroying her own life, yet isn’t doing anything about it. I’m worried about her. I know how hard our parents work for us, and it pains me to see them always in stress and tension because of her. She is my sister and I love her. What should I do before it’s too late?

In the present painful situation of your family, where your elder sister lacks interest in studies, has “very low self-esteem” and “is not talking to anyone in the house” there is nothing you can personally do. Maybe your sister is more interested in a job oriented professional course rather than in college studies; for example joining a school of nursing or a tailoring or beautician training. I wish for a quick solution to this painful situation for you and your family.

I’m ready to forget the past

I am unable to change myself despite a few trials. Every time I lose focus, fatigue dominates me and I go back to my usual self. I was the school topper for the last 4 years. But suddenly I got distracted, fell into bad company and now my grades aren’t even up to the mark of average. I am unable to regain my previous concentration and focus. I am ready to forget my past and start anew. I have already left the negative people, but it’s embarrassing to face others as well as my parents after such a downfall. I have accepted that setbacks are necessary, but it would be very helpful if you give some tips for motivation and sustained focus so that I don’t fall back again from reaching my goals.

You have acknowledged that you have made some mistakes in your life; you got easily distracted and fell into bad company. You are now unable to regain your previous concentration and your grades went down below average, therefore you feel embarrassed to face your parents after such a downfall. This is for you the time to forget the past and start anew. Remember that God brought you into this world through your parents so that you could make them happy and be a useful member of society. Because of weakness and poor motivation you have experienced the pain of setbacks. Be close to your parents and ask them to help you in focusing seriously on your family duties and studies; pray also to God to help you in becoming a good and useful member of society. Do not be discouraged and work hard to achieve your goals in life.

I’m addicted to her

I’m studying in Std. XI. I have been best friends with a girl since 2015. But recently she said that she doesn’t like me at all. We often fight with each other. It’s been 2 months that we haven’t spoken to each other. Once upon a time we used to be good and best friends in our class. I don’t know what has happened to her. I can’t concentrate on my studies. I think about her always and want to be with her. What should I do?

Try to find out if you have hurt that fried of yours in the past, because now she doesn’t like you at all. If it is your fault you have to apologize and rebuild her confidence in you. You are now often fighting with each other and have not spoken for the last 2 months. You cannot force your friendship or anyone; be frank, honest and sincere in dealing with her and let her decide if she is interested in continuing this relationship. It is up to her to decide if she wants to be with you or not.

I have feelings for her

I met a girl a few months back, it was just very normal at that time, but I think I have developed feelings for her. The thing is I don’t know if she feels the same for me. Sometimes it looks like she’s interested, sometimes it doesn’t. I thought of telling her, but I don’t want to ruin the friendship we already have. I understand that yes/no is her choice, but a ‘no’ might mean ruining our friendship. It’s like a leap of faith really. What should I do?

Do not be in a hurry in your relationship with that girl. Give yourself and her time to grow freely together as good and close friends. The more you will share together your life, problems and expectations the deeper your relationship will grow. Slowly you will discover what you have in common, what you want in life and how you are planning your future. The moment will come when both of you will understand each other in a deeper way and develop deeper feelings for each other. This could result in building a deeper friendship or in developing a closer and warmer feeling between you which could lead to planning a life together.

I am very close to my friends

I’m very close to my friends and my friend circle consists of both boys and girls. Until last year we all were very close but this year I don’t know what happened – they are all not talking to each other and can’t see each other. The boys talk rubbish about the girls and the girls talk rubbish about the boys. I’m confused about which side I should be on – girls or boys. What should I do? I want the old group back!

During the teenage many things change fast; even relationships. In a few years boys and girls mature physically, emotionally and intellectually. No wonder their approach to each other changes and this can generate confusion. Choose a few good friends carefully and spend time with them, sharing your life and experience with them. Discuss with them your doubts and confusion; they too will share with you. Slowly you will understand how to relate to girls and boys and decide how to approach them. Look at the future more than the past.

I don’t have a social life

I am 18 years old, and I just completed my first year of college. This summer to take summer classes due to which I stay busy with my course work. I also have a part-time job due to which my schedule is hectic. My grandparents have lots of expectations from me, but they don’t see how much I’m struggling with life. I don’t have any social life. The only thing going on in my life is work and study. This gets me so frustrated, and my morale falls. The problem is that my grandparents don’t let me have a social life; they only want me to study and work which frustrates me. Sometimes I even feel depressed. Please help me.

You are living with my grandparents who care for you and have lots of expectations from you. The problem is that your schedule is hectic due to your commitments: summer classes and a part-time job. I do not know what happened to your parents but I presume they are not in position to help you and cover your expenses. No doubt you and your grandparents are struggling with this situation. You are now worried that you don’t have a social life; your life is work and study. You should decide what is most important in your life in this particular situation. You have a choice between completing your education and earning enough to build your future or giving up all that and search for social life. The best choice for you in this moment is the first one; while studying and working you will build many relationships which will keep you in touch with the surrounding community and local culture. You can socialize while studying and working. Be grateful to your grandparents for taking care of you and build good friends among your fellow students and workers.
