My Science School

I am studying B.Sc. (Computer Science). I am confused about what to choose after this. I am interested in the banking line but many say that doing M.Sc./MCA instead will be good for me. Please advise.

MCA is a rigorous 3-year programme of intensive theory with more emphasis on practical, seminars and project work. Considered to be on par with a B.E. or B.Tech., this course has greater market acceptability, especially for professional jobs in software.

But if you want to enter into banking, you may give the exam for probationary officer after graduation. These examinations, conducted by various banks, are highly competitive and require intense preparation in order to get through. Foreign and private banks prefer to take MBAs, MFCs, Chartered Financial Analysts and CA's with some experience.

Both options are good. But first you need to find out what your interests and aptitudes are. Also talk to bank professionals about their working before deciding.

I am in Std VIII and interested in Applied Engineering. I want to know more about it and career options available. What courses should I take after Std X? Also suggest some good colleges offering Applied Engineering in Mumbai.

Applied engineering is the application of management, design, and technical skills for the design and integration of diverse problems and settings. The programme provides a broad foundation in science and mathematics, engineering and business management.

It is a new branch and not many colleges offer this. However, to pursue your studies in any branch of engineering you should take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 10+2, then appear in entrance exams like JEE and MHCET.

I am in Std IX. I want to become a combat pilot in the Indian Air Force. What should I do after Std X? And where do I have to go for admission and training?

In order to become a combat (or fighter) pilot you should join the flying branch of Indian Air Force, There are two ways to enter it: as a graduate or through NDA (National Defence Academy). For both entries, you should have Physics and Mathematics in 10+2.

Only male candidates are eligible to apply for NDA. For selection, UPSC conducts an entrance examination twice a year. Short-listed candidates go through a rigorous three-year training regimen at the NDA at Khadakwasla, Pune, followed by specialized training at one of the Air Force training establishments. On successful completion, they are commissioned as Permanent Commission Officers and posted as pilots at any of the Air Force stations.

Otherwise, after completing your graduation you may enter the flying branch through the Air Force Academy. There are three ways: CDSE (Combined Defence Services examination), NCC Special Entry or SSC (Short Service Commission) entry.

I'm a student of Std XI (Arts) in Meghalaya state board and I want to do an economics honours degree. What are the best career options related to economics?

Economics is the study of all aspects of the economy, from local consumer spending to global stock markets. It is a good basis for advanced professional degrees in areas such as management, finance, law and public affairs.

A bachelor's degree with a specialization in economics is good preparation for many entry-level positions as a research assistant, administrative or management trainee, marketing interviewer or professional sales jobs. Financial institutions like the Reserve Bank of India offer openings to post-graduate degree holders in economics. The Indian Economic Service is open to post-graduates with economics. After clearing the examination one is entitled to Class I government service.

A Ph.D. is necessary in order to become an economist or to get a high-level marketing position in many organizations. Business firms, banks and other financial institutions employ economists to evaluate their market positions and many business managers believe that economic training is desirable for positions in sales or management.

I am in Std XII with PCM. I love Astrophysics and Particle Physics. Is there any field that requires both subjects? What is the scope in India for Astrophysics and Particle Physics? Also suggest some colleges having these faculties.

Particle Physics is the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces of nature. Astrophysics studies the physical properties of astronomical objects such as stars, galaxies, and the interstellar medium, as well as their interactions. These are specialized field of Physics. To enter into these fields you need to have a scientific bent of mind and the desire to explore. To study this field, go for a B.Sc. in Physics. Then you can apply for M.Sc. in Astrophysics.

I am in Std VIII. I want to make a career in bio medical engineering. Which courses should I take after Std X? Please suggest some good colleges in Mumbai.

Biomedical engineers utilize the customary engineering methods and theories to examine and resolve problems in biology and medicine, and thereby provide a complete enhancement of health care. X-ray machines, pacemakers, drug infusion pumps, artificial organs, medical implants: these are all creations of biomedical engineers. They sometimes do research on how to best design computer software and electric circuits meant to be used for medical purposes.

After completing Std XII (Humanities), what are the courses in designing at the degree level? I want to make my career in the design world. What are the best design institutions in India? Are there enough job opportunities both in the government and the private sector? Please give me a better idea about this field.

Designers have a hand in virtually every industry, from textiles (clothing design) to publishing (graphic design). They devise arrangements of materials, colours, shapes, and textures with the goal of making end products that are aesthetically pleasing and serve specific purposes.

Graphic Designers create stunning print products and advertising campaigns; Interior Designers make our living spaces look great; Landscape Designers conceptualize lush gardens and green area. Set Designers ensure that the theatre productions you see look fab, while Fashion Designers ensure that you too look good. Product Designers think about every curve, switch and button to make the things you use every day more convenient and attractive. Even Architects are designers, creating buildings that become part of our history. There are even Package Designers who design the packaging enclosing the goods you see on the shelves of your local supermarket or department store. The list goes on and on.

The most important skills in most design fields are artistic talent, the ability to understand the practical needs of the market for which you're designing and the ability to communicate effectively with others. A strong portfolio of your work is essential.

After completing 10+2 with any stream you can go for a design course in the field of your choice. B.Des. (Bachelor in Design) is a four-year degree course. There are many design institutes all over India: National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad; National Institute of Fashion Technology at various places and Footwear Design & Development Institute, New Delhi.

I want to do B.M.M. Is there a good scope in Mumbai? What are the job opportunities in this field?

Bachelor in Mass Media (BMM) teaches students the skills necessary for careers in reporting, writing and editing functions with newspapers, wire services, magazines and special publications. It has been designed to provide students with a firm grounding in communication skills, critical thinking and creativity.

During the course, emphasis is given to field assignments and practicals. A good course in journalism gives you the chance to do an internship with some of the best names in business, besides teaching the basic skills.

Students of B.M.M. are usually employed by newspapers and magazines, television channels, radio stations, websites and other media. Some of them do freelance work. Due to an increase in the number of TV channels, radio stations, websites, suburban weekly and daily newspapers there is an increase in jobs in this field. Some find this field too stressful and hectic, or don't like the lifestyle and transfer to public relations or advertising work.

I am a student of Std XII (Science) and I want to pursue wildlife photography. What courses should I take up and which institutions provide such courses?

To be a good wildlife photographer, it is essential to love and care for animals. Start observing your surroundings first and shoot common animals and birds. At this stage, a professional camera is not required. Later you can work for travel and geographic magazines, calendars, etc. as you travel around capturing waterfalls, landscapes, wildlife and other interesting shades of nature.

Wildlife photography is a specialized branch of photography. First you can join a basic photography course and build knowledge from there. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad offers BFA (Photography).
